In-Depth Analysis

As IBM expands its business into software and services, consulting has become a strategic focus, particularly in the AI space.

IBM CEO and Chairman Arvind Krishna outlined this direction to investors during the company's AprilQ1 2026 earnings call. "AI is both a growth driver and a productivity engine," he said. "As agents take on more work, delivery will become faster, more software-driven, and more scalable. IBM is actively embracing this shift through the Consulting Advantage platform."

Consulting accounts for approximatelyone-third of IBM's Q1 revenue, with total revenue for the quarter nearing $16 billion. According to IBM CFO and Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations James Kavanaugh, the consulting business contributed about 40% of the company's signings in the quarter. He stated on the earnings call that consulting has become the core of the company's "services-as-software" model, which uses AI to automate service-related tasks.

Before officially opening theIBM Consulting Advantage platformto customers, IBM tested generative and agentic AI solutions within its internal consulting teams for two years. According to Thursday's announcement, the company is forming AI agent teams for specific applications in industries such as aerospace, financial services, government, healthcare, and telecommunications, while building data pipelines to connect enterprise data with Gemini models.

Expanding the Google Cloud technical consulting team (including those working on-site at customer locations, known asfield deployment engineers) also addresses another customer need: despite layoffs in other areas at large tech companies, the AI talent pool continues to be absorbed by them.

"We use the term 'field deployment units,'" Andy Baldwin, Senior Vice President of Product and Growth at IBM Consulting, told Channel Dive. "The teams we deploy include process experts, industry experts, and engineers who use the platform."
